Election Day in the United States is the day set for general elections of public officials, typically held on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November. This is when voters across the country go to the polls to elect representatives, such as the president, members of Congress, governors, state legislators, and various local officials.
In presidential election years, Election Day is particularly significant, as it determines who will hold the highest office in the country. In non-presidential (or "midterm") years, elections still occur for congressional seats, state, and local offices, and sometimes ballot measures or referendums are also decided.
