Moving in cold weather can be challenging, but with the right preparation, you can make it less dangerous. Here are some essential tips:

1. Plan Ahead

  • Check the weather forecast to anticipate any storms or extreme cold.
  • Book movers early, as winter availability can be unpredictable.
  • Prepare for delays, especially if there’s snow or ice.

2. Protect Your Belongings

  • Use plastic bins instead of cardboard to prevent moisture damage.
  • Wrap fragile items well in blankets and with stretch wrap to protect from harsh weather.
  • Keep electronics warm by transporting them in your car instead of the moving truck.

3. Keep Pathways Safe

  • Shovel and salt driveways, sidewalks, and stairs to prevent slipping. Black ice can be tricky.
  • Lay down tarps or rugs inside to protect floors from snow and mud. At Fantastic moves we offer floor protection

4. Dress for the Weather

  • Wear layers so you can adjust as you warm up from moving.
  • Gloves with grip will help keep hands warm and prevent dropping items.
  • Waterproof boots will keep your feet dry and provide traction.

5. Keep Essentials Handy

  • Pack a winter emergency kit with blankets, gloves, snacks, and a first-aid kit.
  • Have hot drinks and hand  warmers available for warmth. Remember to drink water even on cold days
  • Carry important documents, medications, and valuables with you.

6. Prepare Your Home

  • Keep utilities on until you're fully moved out.
  • Ensure heat is working in your new home before arrival.
  • Set up a warming station with space heaters in one room to take breaks.

7. Be Cautious with Your Vehicle

  • Get a tune-up before the move to ensure your car or rental truck is winter-ready.
  • Keep an ice scraper and extra  windshield wiper fluid on hand.
  • Have snow chains or winter tires if moving to an area with heavy snow.
